Sueño del mar: Great spot for snorkeling in Tamarindo!

Our boutique bed and breakfast is situated in a great spot for snorkeling in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. The best time to snorkel is around mid-tide when the waves are fairly gentle and it’s easy to navigate through the reef.

In the reef in front of our hotel you can see a variety of sea life including lobsters, eels, star fish, crabs, and several species of fish. Here are some of our favorite ocean friends:

Brittle Starfish

Blue-striped Angel Fish & Damsel Fish

 Puffer Fish

Butterfly Fish

 Hermit Crabs

This is just a small sampling of the creatures you can see out in the reef just steps from us here at Sueño del Mar. If you don’t feel like bringing your snorkel gear with you, don’t worry! We have some masks and snorkels you can borrow!

Sueno del Mar Sweet & Sovory Breakfast Options!

If you’re looking for sweet and savory breakfast options to start your morning, here at Sueño del Mar Bed & Breakfast we offer you both! When you first step onto our breakfast terrace we will greet you with a cup of Costa Rican coffee or herbal tea. Our very own in-house chef Lili will prepare your meal, starting you out with a plate of fresh tropical fruit. Here at Sueño del Mar we always have the freshest selection of local produce with an assortment of fruit usually including mango, banana, papaya, watermelon, and pineapple.

Following your first course of fresh fruit is usually the savory portion of our breakfast. Each morning is different, but one of our favorite savory dishes is a typical Costa Rican breakfast plate of fried eggs, gallo pinto (beans and rice dish), and fried plantains and cheese.

Remember to save room for a third course of breakfast, as Lili likes to send out something sweet to complete the meal. The dessert portion of our breakfast is always homemade and fresh out of the oven and can include anything from cream cheese-stuffed french toast to warm fruit pastries. One of the yummy options is also a fresh banana pancake, which never disappoints!

When deciding on a place to stay for your Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation, consider our boutique bed and breakfast where we can spoil you every day with a three-course breakfast on our breakfast terrace tucked in our gardens overlooking the beach!

Costa Rica Coffee Production

A major benefit of visiting our boutique bed & breakfast is the gourmet breakfast you are served each morning accompanied by a cup of Costa Rican's finest coffee! There's a reason artisan coffee shops in other countries offer Costa Rican coffee, and that is because it is some of the best in the world. Starting in the 19th century, coffee became one of Costa Rica's major exports and to this day keeps Costa Rica ranked as the 13th-largest producer of coffee worldwide.

So what sets Costa Rican coffee apart? First of all, more than half or the 70,000 coffee farmers in the country are part of cooperatives involved with fair trade organizations. These fair trade organizations help secure better rights and salaries for small farmers and promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Along with being fair trade, the flavor of Costa Rican coffee will definitely entice you to have more than just one cup! The classic Costa Rican cup of joe is usually described as being softly acidic and mild.

So come stay with us at our boutique bed & breakfast in Tamarindo, and you will be welcomed to the breakfast terrace with a fresh cup of coffee! You can see for yourself why we are proud to serve you our local brew and why you'll want to take a few bags home with you when you go.

Pottery from the town of Guaitil

When visiting our boutique bed & breakfast in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, you will probably want to purchase a locally-made souvenir to take back home. One of the oldest and most well-known souvenirs in the country you can purchase is a handmade piece of pottery from the town of Guaitil. Famous throughout Costa Rica, the tiny village located in Guanacaste in less than an hour away from Tamarindo. The people of Guaitil take great pride in their pre-Columbian Chorotega style pottery which is made using the same traditions and techniques of their ancestors. The entire village is dedicated to the production and trade of pottery, as the craft has been passed down from generations.

If you can take a visit to the village of Guaitil while you are in Costa Rica, you can find all sorts of different clay pottery including bowls, jars, vases, pitchers, animal figurines, and platters. The pottery is made by drying the clay first and then crushing it into a powder. Then the potters mix the clay powder with sand and water. Then the piece of pottery is formed, painted, and polished on a stone to make the piece shiny. Afterwards the pottery is allowed to dry and then put into a fire-burning oven.

We hope you are able to take a home an authentic piece of Costa Rican pottery with you after your stay at our bed & breakfast hotel!

Guanacaste Tree

When driving to our Bed & Breakfast in Tamarindo, Costa Rica you will definitely pass some of our beautiful vegetation including many fruit trees, flowering shrubs, fields of sugar cane, and some incredible shade trees. One tree that stands out among the rest is the guanacaste tree, the tree for which our region of Costa Rica is named. In fact, the guanacaste tree was declared Costa Rica's national tree in 1959.

The guanacaste tree is said to symbolize stability and growth, as well as the power of Mother Nature.

The guanacaste tree is easily identified by it's very large crown of leafy branches and it's permanent green color. The term guancaste tree means ear tree because the curled seed pods on the trees resemble ears.

The guanacaste tree is important to Costarrican culture because the wood of this tree is water-resistant and easy to work with, which makes it a popular wood for making everything from furniture to oxcart wheels. Medicinally, the tree has been used to treat various ailments such as lung infections and colds, and the extract from the bark has even been used as a soap substitute.

Here at our Bed & Breakfast we are proud to have our rooms shaded by one of these magnificent trees!

Camila & Kenneth Wedding Day

Camilla and Kenneth traveled from Norway with seven of their closest friends to Playa Langosta, Costa Rica for an incredibly intimate, laid back destination wedding here at our bed & breakfast. The bride and groom chose Sueno del Mar Bed & Breakfast not only for their beachfront wedding but also for the entire week-long vacation with their friends. The bride wanted a bohemian feel to her wedding, which is why she chose to have Liquid Weddings decorate with white feathers, simple wooden boxes of white flowers, and white moroccan latterns hanging in the palm trees in front of the beach at our boutique hotel. Following a dinner under the palm trees, the couple and their friends enjoyed a private bonfire on the beach under the stars. If you are looking for the perfect place for a beautiful, intimate wedding, our boutique bed & breakfast is the perfect place!
