International Coffee Day in Costa Rica

Today is International Coffee Day!  Many countries around the world participate in International Coffee Day and here in Costa Rica, we also have a "National Coffee Day" on September 12th!

While we don't actually need a reason to celebrate coffee as we enjoy it every day here in Costa Rica at Sueno del Mar Bed and Breakfast, we thought we'd share a little bit about our coffee growing country with you:

• The only type of coffee that may be planted in Costa Rica is the Arabica variety
• About 90% of the coffee harvested here in Costa Rica is exported
• There are seven coffee producing regions in Costa Rica
• Most of the coffee grown comes from mountainous regions
• There are two types of classifications for coffee: There is the pure variety and there is a type that includes up to 10% sugar added in

Basilico Catering Services at Sueno Del Mar Bed and Breakfast

If you have visited our Bed and Breakfast in the last two years, we are sure you know our manager Sol.  She is a multi-talented young woman, always very dedicated and helping everybody with any problem and concerns.  She calls herself "The Fixer" and she can surprise you at any time with her excellent service and friendly smile! 

One of her favorite things to do is cooking! For five years now, she has owned Basilico Catering.  With the help of her brother and her friend, she started this project with passion and love! She can cook for everyone from an intimate dinner for a honeymoon couple to a 140 wedding guest party in the middle of the jungle! Mixing mediterranean flavors with fresh tropical ingredients, she creates amazing dishes! 

 

Not so long ago, she cooked for Jennifer and Phil on their honeymoon! The meal consisted of 3 courses, starting with a mixed green salad with citrus vinaigrette, a main course of fresh ahi tuna with jasmine rice and sautéed local vegetables served with a soy-lime and ginger spice sauce and finishing with one of her famous lime squares as a wonderful dessert!

Apple cake recipe from Sueno del Mar

Every morning Lily makes a delicious dessert for our guests. We've already shared with you some of the amazing recipes we create here at our Bed and Breakfast. Today we will share with you how to make our delicious apple cake.

Ingredients:

• 700 gr of apples
• 100 gr of butter
• 2 medium eggs
• 1 level tsp of cinnamon powder
• 1 sachet of baking powder
• 200 gr of sugar 

• 200 gr  of flour
• 1 pinch of salt
• the grated zest and the juice of 1 organic lemon (grated zest + juice)
• 200 ml of fresh whole milk

Directions:

• Peel the apples, remove the core, cut them into quarters, then slice them across the narrow side. Put all the slices in a bowl and add the grated zest and the juice of an organic lemon
• In a mixing bowl, add the softened butter, sugar, cinnamon, eggs and the milk. Blend until you have a smooth and even mixture; you could also use a whisk or a beater, but sometimes the butter goes lump
• After pouring the mixture into a bowl, add together the sifted flour, the baking powder and the salt and blend everything: as you can see, now we have a rather thick dough. At this point, add the apples to the dough. 
• Mix everything to blend well
• After blending all the ingredients, pour them into a 9-inch cake pan, greased with butter and flour. Then bake the cake at 350°F (180°C) for 50-60 minutes.
• When the cake is finished, let it cool down completely.

Try it at home and bring a little bit of Sueno del Mar into your morning meal!
