Guanabana (soursop) fruit from Costa Rica

The guanabana fruit is one of the most delicious tropical treats you can find here in Costa Rica.    Guanabana fruits are easily recognized in local markets because they are shaped like a heart, green with a spiny skin and inside is a white creamy pulp with black seeds.  The pulp can be a little sour (hence why it's called soursop in English) but with a little sweetener, it tastes delicious.

This fruit contain special organic compounds called annonaceous acetogenins, which researchers say can target and kill cancer cells.  These studies have confirmed the anti-tumor, anti-parasitic, insecticidal, and anti-microbial activities of soursop, which indigenous people discovered centuries ago!

At our Langosta Bed and Breakfast, we serve guanabana juice at least two times per week.  Lily and Victor make the most exquisite fresco (fresh) juices.  Nothing better than this fruit to start your day!

We love it when Lili decides to make Arepas for breakfast as our boutique is always filled with a perfume making it impossible to sleep! Be sure to try the delicious sweet Arepas during your stay with us.

Recipe:

For the Sweet Arepas:
1 cup All purpose flour
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon of baking powder.
Vegetable oil for frying

1. To make the arepas: Combine the flour, warm water, cinnamon and sugar, mixing thoroughly. Let mixture stand for five minutes.
2. Knead with your hands for about 3 minutes, moistening your hands with water as you work.
3. Form 6 small balls with the dough. Place each ball between 2 plastic bags and with a flat pot cover, flatten to ¼ inch.
4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large heavy pot to 350 F. Add the arepas in the heated oil one by one, fry for 3 minutes, turning over once about half way through.
5. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the arepas from the oil and drain on paper towels and sprinkle with sugar.

Yum!

History:

The arepa is a flat, round, unleavened patty made of cornmeal or flour which can be grilled, baked, boiled, or fried, steamed etc. The characteristics vary by color, flavor, size, and the food with which it may be stuffed, depending on the region. Arepa is a native sort of bread made of ground corn (or flour), water, and salt which is fried into a thick bread.

Delicious Costa Rican Gallo Pinto at Sueno del Mar

The name Gallo Pinto means "spotted rooster." When the beans and rice are combined, the rice
gets colored by the beans, and this results in a multi-colored, or speckled, appearance. It is Costa
Rica's best and most typical breakfast!  Enjoy it on Friday's, here at Sueno del Mar Bed and Breakfast!
