Summertime in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica there are two seasons. The summer season, starting in November or early December is the time when many people travel to the country. Summertime in Costa Rica is absolutely brilliant, with many special holidays and celebrations. During the summer season Costa Rica residents and tourists celebrate the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, Palmares Fiestas, and Semana Santa (Easter week) as well as local fiestas held in the small towns throughout the country. While the US and Canada are experiencing colder weather, it is summer in Costa Rica and no wonder tourists prefer to flock to our beautiful location instead of braving another winter at home.

Transitioning from winter to summer in Northwest Costa Rica means warm tropical breezes, very little, if any, rain and beautiful blue skies and sunshine each day.  Northwest Costa Rica, during the summer, sees short-term tourists as well as long term residents who vacation here for the winter months.

There are more birds migrating into the area and the scenery all around is breathtaking. Flowering on some of the trees, clear blue water and white sand at the beaches as well as a fun atmosphere amongst all the people, these are just a few of the delightful enjoyments experienced with a summer vacation at Sueno del Mar Bed and Breakfast. If you’re planning a vacation to Costa Rica, plan your visit during this amazing season and see why so many people love our country so much, returning time and time again.  Contact us today to get out of the cold and into our warm tropical Playa Langosta B&B!

Travel Tips for Your Costa Rica Vacation at Sueno del Mar

How exciting that you're coming to visit us here in Tamarindo on your Costa Rica vacation! Here are some tips for planning your trip:

Summer or Winter:

·         From November through April it's usually dry and quite warm with an average high in March of 33°C (91°F).
·         From May through October there's more chance of rain, but it's a bit cooler. Average temperatures in September are about 26°C (79°F). Tamarindo is generally drier than other parts of Costa Rica.
·         The monthly averages all year round range from 26°C (79°F) to 29°C (84°F), so there's really not a big variation; the weather is generally very pleasant.

Be sure to take:

·         Besides summer clothes and at least one bathing suit, remember to take sunblock and sunglasses.
·         Pack a good pair of hiking shoes/water shoes and insect repellent, especially if you're going to be visiting nature preserves.
·         Pack a light rain poncho just in case there's a sudden shower.

From Canada or the US:

·         You don't need a visa, but you'll need a valid passport and proof that you'll be leaving Costa Rica at the end of your stay. Have either your return airline ticket, bus ticket, or cruise ship receipt handy to show to officials.
·         Departure tax is US $29.
·         You may drive with your normal Canadian or US driver's license here in Costa Rica.

Where the fun is:

·         Tamarindo is known for its white-sand beach; it's a great area for snorkeling, surfing, or sea kayaking.
·         There are ATV tours, canopy tours, and horseback riding nearby.
·         Sailboat charters and sunset catamaran cruises are lovely and very popular. Sport-fishing for marlin and sailfish is excellent just twenty minutes offshore. Pick your favorite charter captain and have a wonderful time!

The 4 types of monkeys in Costa Rica

Out of 200 mammal species in Costa Rica, only four are monkeys, and can often be spotted in the wild, depending on the area that you are visiting.  Here in Tamarindo, you can almost always see howler monkeys in the local area and Capuchins can be found near Palo Verde National Park.  However, Squirrel monkeys and Spider monkeys are generally found in other regions of the country.

Howler monkeys are vegetarian (just like our delicious breakfasts at Sueno del Mar!), while the others are omnivores. Because of human predation and construction, they are all declining or endangered or declining species.

These four types of monkeys forage for vegetation during the day, avoiding common enemies such as jaguars, raptor birds, snakes, crocodiles, and humans beings. They sleep in trees at night (and often take an afternoon siesta to avoid the tropical sun!).  Howlers, Squirrel and Spider monkeys who live in the canopies have the fewest enemies and generally lead a peaceful life moving around their territory with ease.
Costa Rican monkeys are social creatures, living in groups consisting of a few males, mostly females. Grooming and vocalization are how these four kinds of monkeys communicate. Howler monkeys and spider monkeys have the loudest vocals. A howler monkey can be heard for a distance of three miles so you will most often hear them, before seeing the, during your Costa Rica vacation at our Bed and Breakfast near Tamarindo!
