One of the most exciting times of year here at Sueño del Mar Bed & Breakfast is New Year’s! At the beginning of the new year is when high season is officially in full-swing, and we are so happy to welcome our new and old friends back to the property here in Tamarindo, Costa Rica.

We are so honored the Jay Family always chooses our boutique bed & breakfast for their family New Year’s celebration each year! Over the past five years we have gotten to know the family well, and we look forward to seeing them each year. Costa Rica's Arribada - Turtle Season in Ostional

One of our best tours for this month at our Bed and Breakfast is the famous "arribada de Tortugas".  The season runs from September through the end of January!  The arribada only happens on certain days of the month when the moon and tides are just right.  If you happen to be visiting us during one of these special days, we will be happy to arrange a tour for you!  Your guide will pick you up at Sueno del Mar in Playa Langosta and after an hour and a half drive you will arrive at Playa Ostional to watch this wonderful event of nature.

The Ostional National Wildlife Refuge (ONWR) encompasses 400 acres of land and 4,050 acres of ocean on the Nicoya Peninsula. Ostional Beach is 7 kilometers long, with Punta India to the north and the Nosara River mouth to the south.

So what happens during this incredible act of mother nature?  Thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles arrive at the beach to lay their eggs. At first only a few hundred turtles arrive which is then followed by a steady stream of females for the next three to seven days. The Olive Ridley sea turtles are endangered and there are guides at Ostional to ensure the safety of the turtles.

Experience Turtle Season on Costa Rica's Northwest Pacific Coast!

Turtle season has started here on Costa Rica’s Northwest Pacific Coast!  This is always a fun time of year for us as you just never know when you might see a turtle come up onto shore, slowly making her way past the hide tide line and then digging a 2 foot deep hole to lay her eggs in.  Experiencing this amazing phenomenon is often described as a “National Geographic” moment in one's life.  Then just a few short weeks later, it’s so much fun to see the baby turtles dig their way out of the sand and slowly find their way into the deep blue ocean.

While you can see turtles throughout the year along the coast here, they are more prevalent in September, October and November.  Nightly tours are often scheduled for our local beaches and we are more than happy to arrange one for you.  

About 2 hours south of our Langosta Bed and Breakfast is a small town called Ostional where a spectacular occurrence happens every year. It is called an arribada.  If you’re lucky enough to stay with us during that time, we can arrange transportation for you to vist Ostional and see this amazing sight.  An arribada is when 1000’s of turtles come onto the shore of Ostional to lay their eggs in just a 2-3 day period.  The largest ones occur in the months of September and October and depend on the tides and moon phase.

We have 4 types of sea turtles that all Costa Rica home. They are the leatherback, green, hawksbill, and olive ridley.  They are a threatened species so we ask that you respect their boundaries if you see one at the beach unless you are with an experienced guide who will advise you on how best to admire these amazing creatures.
